Carlisle is on the doorstep of The English lake District as well as the lesser known Caldbeck or Pennine Hills and is the Northern gateway to the Western lake District and Lake District Coast. Carlisle has always been the historical gateway, but these days it is the excellent road and rail networks that determine this gateway.
The nearest lake to Carlisle is Bassenthwaite, which of course gives access to The Queen of The lakes - Derwentwater and on to Thirlmere, Ullswater, Windermere, Conistonwater, Wastwater, Ennerdale, Buttermere, Loweswater.
There are numerous round trips that can be created through the lakes from Carlisle.
